Reviewers<\/h2><p>Thank you for agreeing to review for Helminthologia. As a reviewer, you provide an important service to the scientific community: you help maintain scientific standards and, at the same time, help authors make their work known in the best possible form.<\/p><p>Helminthologia is an international open access journal publishing original research and reviews on all aspects of helminthology and related parasitology. It appears quarterly, in English.<\/p><h3 id=\"helm-peer-review-at-helminthologia\">Peer review at Helminthologia<\/h3><ul><li><p><strong>Model:<\/strong> single-blind \u2013 reviewers know the identity of the authors; authors do not know the identity of the reviewers. Please do not reveal your identity in the comments to the authors.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Number of reviewers:<\/strong> each manuscript is evaluated by at least two independent reviewers; review articles require three positive reviews, while for case reports and research notes one reviewer may be sufficient if the report is thorough and the recommendation positive.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Deadline:<\/strong> we ask you to submit your report within <strong>21 days<\/strong> of accepting the invitation. If you need more time, please let the Editorial Office know as soon as possible.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Decision:<\/strong> the editor makes the final decision on the basis of the reviewers' reports. If the recommendations conflict, the editor may invite an additional reviewer.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>System:<\/strong> invitations, manuscripts and reports are handled through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editorialmanager.com\/helminthologia\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Editorial Manager<\/a>.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Reviewing for Helminthologia is voluntary and unpaid.<\/p><p class=\"helm-top\"><a href=\"#helm-toc\">\u2191 Back to contents<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"helm-before-accepting-an-invitation\">Before Accepting an Invitation<\/h2><p>Please reply to the invitation promptly (within 7 days), whether you accept or decline. Before accepting, consider the following:<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>Expertise:<\/strong> does the manuscript match your area of expertise closely enough for a competent evaluation?<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Time:<\/strong> can you submit the report within 21 days?<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Conflict of interest:<\/strong> do you have any competing interest that could affect, or appear to affect, your judgement? Examples include a close collaboration, a joint publication in the last three years, working at the same institution as one of the authors, a personal relationship or rivalry, or a financial interest in the results.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>If you have a conflict of interest, decline the invitation or discuss it with the editor first. If you cannot review the manuscript for any reason, we would be grateful if you could suggest another qualified expert.<\/p><p class=\"helm-top\"><a href=\"#helm-toc\">\u2191 Back to contents<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"helm-confidentiality-and-ethics\">Confidentiality and Ethics<\/h2><p>Helminthologia follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/publicationethics.org\/guidance\/guideline\/ethical-guidelines-peer-reviewers\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers<\/a> and the journal's <a href=\"https:\/\/reference-global.com\/download\/document\/journal\/HELM\/Publication_Ethics_Statement.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Publication Ethics Statement<\/a>.<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>Confidentiality:<\/strong> treat the manuscript and all related material as confidential. Do not share, copy or distribute it, and do not use its data or ideas before publication.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Consulting colleagues:<\/strong> if you wish to involve a colleague or a student in the review, ask the editor first. Their name should be given to the Editorial Office, and they are bound by the same rules of confidentiality.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Contacting authors:<\/strong> do not contact the authors directly. All communication goes through the Editorial Office.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Suspected misconduct:<\/strong> if you suspect plagiarism, duplicate publication, data fabrication or manipulation, or an ethical problem with human or animal studies, tell the editor in your confidential comments. Do not investigate the matter yourself or raise it with the authors.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Citations:<\/strong> suggest additional references only when they are genuinely relevant. Do not ask authors to cite your own work or the journal's articles without a clear scientific reason.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"helm-use-of-artificial-intelligence\">Use of artificial intelligence<\/h3><p>Please use AI tools with care. You may use them to improve the language, grammar or style of your report. However, the evaluation itself must always be your own work: AI tools must not be used to write the review or to assess the manuscript for you. Bear in mind that the manuscript is confidential, so avoid sharing its content with tools that may store or reuse it. You remain fully responsible for the content of your report.<\/p><p class=\"helm-top\"><a href=\"#helm-toc\">\u2191 Back to contents<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"helm-what-to-evaluate\">What to Evaluate<\/h2><p>Formal requirements (format, references, figure files) are checked by the Editorial Office, so please concentrate on the scientific content. Are the findings new and of interest to parasitologists?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"even\"><td>Title and Summary<\/td><td>Does the title reflect the content? Does the Summary present the aim, methods, main results and conclusions?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"odd\"><td>Introduction<\/td><td>Is the background adequate and the aim of the study clearly stated?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"even\"><td>Material and Methods<\/td><td>Are the methods appropriate and described in enough detail to allow the study to be repeated? Are sample sizes and statistical analyses adequate?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"odd\"><td>Taxonomy and nomenclature<\/td><td>Are identifications reliable and supported by appropriate evidence (morphology, molecular data)? Are new taxa described according to the ICZN, with deposited type material?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"even\"><td>Ethics<\/td><td>Is there an Ethical Approval and\/or Informed Consent statement where needed, with the protocol number?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"odd\"><td>Results<\/td><td>Are the results clearly presented and consistent between text, tables and figures?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"even\"><td>Discussion<\/td><td>Are the conclusions supported by the results? Are the limitations of the study acknowledged? Is the relevant literature discussed?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"odd\"><td>Tables and figures<\/td><td>Are they necessary, clear and correctly labelled? Do figures have an informative legend and scale bars where needed?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"even\"><td>References<\/td><td>Are key and recent works cited? Are any important references missing?<\/td><\/tr><tr class=\"odd\"><td>Language<\/td><td>Is the English clear enough for the science to be understood? (Minor language corrections are not needed in your report.)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div><p class=\"helm-top\"><a href=\"#helm-toc\">\u2191 Back to contents<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"helm-writing-the-report\">Writing the Report<\/h2><p>Submit your report in Editorial Manager. It has two parts:<\/p><ol type=\"1\"><li><p><strong>Comments to the authors<\/strong> \u2013 start with a short summary of the manuscript and its main contribution. Then list the major issues (e.g. design, methods, interpretation) and the minor issues (e.g. unclear passages, missing details), ideally with line numbers. Be specific, constructive and courteous; criticise the work, not the authors. Do not state your recommendation (accept or reject) in these comments, because the final decision rests with the editor.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Confidential comments to the editor<\/strong> \u2013 your recommendation and its reasons, any conflict of interest, and any concern about possible misconduct. These comments are not shared with the authors.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p>You may also upload an annotated copy of the manuscript. Authors are asked to return it with a point-by-point response to the reviewers' comments.
